Internet Access in a Remote Village
By adelacuesta
Technologies Available
There are a few solution currently available for this scenario:
- Microwave (broadband wireless) Link
- Fiber Optic Link
- Wireless LOS (laser carrier)
- Telco, 3G, WCDMA
- Satellite ISP
- Ham Radio
Depending on the geographical location, the solutions mentioned above are feasible. Another is for what purpose the internet access is intended for, is this for consumer or business end user.
Item 1-3 is for business customers. This is a big infrastructure project requiring big investments.
The easiest approach for a regular consumer (end user) is to have the items 4 or 5 above. Item 4 if there is an existing wireless carrier phone service. And item 5 if the location has a direct view of the horizon for the satellite access.
Item 6 requires access point/client equipmet set up.
Project Management
There are several factors to consider in getting an internet access in a remote location. These are:
- Cost (budget)
- Geographic location
- Availability of commercial power
- other technical matters
Cost: First and foremost, cost is the number one deciding factor. Does the ratio of benefit to cost is justified. There are turnkey projects but is there a contractor available to facilitate this project.
Geographic Location: How really remote is the location. was it in the middle of a jungle or a barren desert. For every problem there is a solution.
Availability of commercial power: Was the internet access teh only problem? Since this is for a remote location, the provision of electrical power supply could still be a factor.
Other technical factors: This are the matters that could arise in the implementation of the project such as zoning, political, safety, etc.

I was away for quite sometime.
A provider in #5: http://www.hughesnet.com/
Here is #6 explained: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/D-STAR
Cheers!
D-star is proprietary protocol and developed by Icom.
The internet access part is by using DD (digital data) mode.

Thanks for the post. With respect to the mentioned technologies, can you elaborate or give more information on implementation for technology #6? Also, if possible and if you might have come across a successful cost-effective model implementations for #5, could you share the same?
